Scunthorpe is very well known for its Steel industry which first came about in my hometown in the 1860’s. It had three main plants John Lysaights, Redbourne, Appleby and Froddingham which was the biggest of the works, these were situated around the town and provided jobs for thousands of people. But unfortunately over the years, two of the plants shutdown and now there’s only one left standing which recently was put up for sale and hundreds of people were made redundant. Many generations of my family have worked on the Steel Works owned by TATA Steel, my grandfather been a key member of the community. He left school at 15 in 1958 and got an apprenticeship and worked there for 23years, which involved been a manager at two Rod Mills and Billet Mill with 126 men and 12 supervisors.
